My training is going to kick in this week for my next race. The Solemates’ Tryptophun 100 at the end of November is the next run for me. This is a run in the White Tank Mountains right outside of Phoenix. They have a few run options for this race: 4 mile, 6 mile, 7.4 mile, and 24 hours. Each of these options still tops out at about 100 miles but the degree of difficulty of the trails varies with the longest trail being the steepest. We are aiming for the 4 or 6 mile but we will go run the trails to see how difficult each one is before we choose. My diet has been steadily decreasing in calories to take off some of the weight I have put on since The Old Pueblo 50 and I have started to lift weights and do more core work in preparation. I have run a bit this summer but not in the last couple weeks. Next week I begin a new schedule along with hard core change in diet. I will go a couple weeks on a liquid diet with mainly water and Vega One (an all in one nutritional supplement that is basically a vegan Ensure) and I will begin to run and lift in earnest.
Here is my first two weeks of workouts.

This is the basic schedule for my entire schedule. My tempo run will be 6 miles with 1 mile easy/4 miles 8min/mi/1 mi easy. The interval run will be 2 miles easy/4 x 800m @4:00/2 miles easy. 800m walks in between each 800m rep. This probably sounds like a light workout but I am also running in heat (100-110 degrees each day) and humidity depending on the time of day. My goal here is to get the long and slow going to increase my glycogen stores. I am also working on speed so I might actually attempt to finish this race with a respectable time. My biggest challenge here is to get my head wrapped around continuing even when I am tired. My Saturday and Sunday workouts will evolve into back-to-back long runs as my schedule moves closer to race day. Not only will the weather be cooler, but I will also be in better shape for those runs. I will also be running some of those at night and finishing between 3 and 6 am so I can be acclimated to running at a time when I would normally be sleeping. In the past, I have been a bit of a night owl so I should be fine for this. I worked the overnight shift for years so I think this might be fun. Not sure I will think this after I have already run 50 miles that day, we will see. I will be using Nike+ to post my runs online and I will also be using my Garmin (until the thing dies for good) to help track my heart rate and my distances.
Meditation will continue to be a big part of my routine to keep me resting better and increase my focus.

Summer officially begins for my family today. The kids had summer camp for the 4 weeks after school was out so it was not really summer yet. Even though they only went for 3 hours a day for 4 weeks, it was still school. Tomorrow we go to the LEGO Movie at the summer movies. We have not seen it yet. We bought the Blu-Ray but we wanted the kids to have something to look forward to so we held off watching it at home. They are still reluctant to go to the theater at times so seeing a movie they have not seen yet might be motivation as well.
Education. We are continuing their education over the summer but we make it as fun as we can. Dictator is getting good at reading and can even sit and read some material by himself. Her Majesty wants desperately to do the same activities as her brother but still struggles. This is a point of contention for him because he wants to do his work by himself. We bought membership to the science museum so we will be going there many times over the month before school starts again. Fortunately, they are now going to the same school so they start and end not only at the same time but in the same location. This saves a lot of travel time.
I am slowly getting the garage not only straightened but also cleared of a lot of garbage we have collected over the years. This task is getting slower as the kids get older because 4 people generate more junk than 2. Stuff that goes in the garage tends to disappear, though if it not remembered within a couple weeks. The real difficulty is getting rid of things that we ‘might’ need in the future. I have noticed that a lot of the time things we dispose of tend to become useful shortly after they are gone. We also need to have both springs on the garage door replaced. A few months ago I remember the door slamming down harder than normal but I did not think much of it. Right after, the door would not open on its own anymore. I noticed that a couple wires were loose and I have spent a few months problem-solving the door from time to time. It occurred to me that the spring might be broken but thinking back, one of the springs was always broken and it never occurred to me that it was running on one spring until it was pointed out by my mother-in-law. I realize now that one of the springs has always been broken.
We are looking at possibly going to Sea World this summer, if we can swing it. I spent a lot of summer vacations in my youth in San Diego because my uncle lived/lives there. For awhile my grandmother was there as well. Those were fun times. My kids want to go to a beach and I really want them to experience all the fun of Sea World. We would also get to see family.
This has become a travesty. Applying for a cashier job and I do not even get a ‘Thank you for applying’ letter. I believe I have said this before, applying for a job online is a ridiculous and soul-sucking endeavor. Not being able to contact a real person for a job that requires less skill than it takes to walk and breathe at the same time is silly. Want to know what is even more ridiculous? I will tell you. The jobs I apply for have been open since I first applied a year ago. Even a job like a baker that does require some knowledge and skill could involve training and am fairly sure I could have become a proficient baker in an entire year of on-the-job training.
I may just look into one of these at-home businesses. Maybe I can sell people vitamins or something. I am past doing jobs I can’t believe in, though. I have to do some research. I have seen a few that might work but most of the products are just soulless, manufactured crap aimed at making a buck. Of course, this is the majority of what it seems people do these days anyway. Maybe I am just aiming for a standard too high for the workplace today.
I run when I can. I am focusing on mountain running. We are running in the Solemates Tryptophun Run this fall. Fortunately, this is local and we can actually practice/train on the course we will be racing on. It is also a 7 mile loop so, even if someone gets lost, someone can still be easily be found. I need to work because the races I want to race in are beginning to cost a lot more money. The three races I want to race in this winter will cost over $500 just for race fees. This does not include time to train, nutrition, and equipment.
Alta. I have a pair of Alta shoes that I have only used a few times. The sole is coming away from the upper. I am sad about this because I thought these were well made shoes. I might try another model but I think I will try for a pair of Skora or Vibrams for the 100 mile race. Fortunately, the loop is only 7 miles, So I can test different shoes for distance on the day of the race.
It was still raining and the road was rather treacherous on my return. The entire road from the freeway to the camp (8 to 10 miles) is dirt but after 6 hours of rain, it was all mud and small lakes. It took a whole lot longer than I wanted but I was really in no hurry since my friend was not due for several hours. I took my time because I really did not want to break the car nor did I want to get stuck. I was glad to have taken his car because I do not think my minivan would have been able to get the traction on many of those muddy hills nor get through some of those small lakes. I got to the camp and parked up on the hill where we had parked before. That was a mistake. The majority of the parking is up on a hill above the Kentucky Camp and the road down is soft dirt making the whole walk down a wet muddy mess. I was not wearing decent shoes for this weather so this was not a fun experience. My shoes were soaked after just a few steps, fortunately, I was able to avoid the deep, soft mud.
I arrived back at Kentucky Camp early to cheer on the finishers. I found out that people could check on the progress of runners so I attempted to locate Louis. Turns out, he did not check in at Station 29. A little more questioning and I found out that he and many others did not check in at Station 33 either. I did not worry because they said that they located some of those who did not check in at 33. They said that a whole group came in at the same time and some just did not get recorded. At around 5 o’clock, I went to stand in the communication center to listen for word of Louis and the other runners. It was somewhat chaotic (not just for me, for the workers as well).
Between mile 33 and 46 there is a river crossing. This area is in the desert and when it rains in the desert the lower lands flood really fast with just a little rain in the mountains. We knew about the river but no one counted on 3 feet or deeper water at that point. At around 5:30 runners coming in were reporting that the river was getting deep and fast. 15 minutes later after investigation the speed and depth of the water, the acting director closed the race to anyone coming into Stations 33 and 46. The rain also opened up a river hazard for the area between Station 46 and the finish so they were told to hold all runners at those two stations. Runners were reporting being swept off their feet at both river sections and we were all getting worried. I also remembered hearing on television that another storm was supposed to hit sometime after midnight. At about 7, the workers and the director were all communicating with the aide stations and attempting to locate all the runners. There were about 17 unaccounted for at this point. The thing about all this is that Louis was the only one who had not been recorded at Station 29. The rest of the runners were seen or recorded at 29 and 33.
I am starting to wonder when they are going to call in rescue and I voiced my concerns. About 7:30 they decided to finally make the call. They finally got through to Cochise County Rescue. It turns out that the area we were in was in a different county from the running course. In fact, we crossed three counties. The dispatcher told the race communications coordinator that he would call the Santa Cruz County Rescue in on the matter. The communications coordinator told him that he was hoping to have a tri-county effort and the response was, “we will call Santa Cruz.” Turns out they are closest rescue with a helicopter. 45 minutes later they were still dragging their feet. Shortly after the call to Cochise, one of the communications operators was talking with the local fire department on the radio. The fire department dispatcher told us that they could not send out rescue until daybreak because the river could not be crossed by any vehicles. I (along with everyone else in the room) was speechless. After a few moments I spoke up. I said, “You have 12 plus people out there who are basically naked. It is cold and getting colder. The temperatures will approach freezing and there is another storm coming tonight. Those people do not have rain gear nor do they have headlamps. All of the night and cold weather gear was in their packs at miles 33 and 46. How many kinds of stupid do you need to be to figure that out? They will be hypothermic very soon and unlikely to survive until morning. The Communications Coordinator told the operator to call him back and explain the situation to them. their solution was to have the captain of the fire station go out to Kentucky Camp. He got there at about 9:15. Right as I was at my wits end.
I was finally putting the pieces together. Louis did not check in at 29. He did not check in at 33. Their sweepers found no one while looking along that first section of the course (no one thought to tell them to keep looking until they found the only runner who did not check in on that section of the course), but they were back by 6 or 7. At about 9, my conclusion was one of two things happened: a. Louis got lost. He turned back onto the first half of the course and got lost because there were no markers left to guide him. Or b. He got hurt. There was a steep slope on the southern side of that road I last saw him on and had he fallen, no one would have been around to see him. It was cold enough and he was tired enough that if he were hurt, he might not have been able to get back to the road. Either way, I was done listening to these people spin their wheels. I went back to the waiting room where the rest of Louis’ race team was waiting. I told them I was leaving to go get him and they tried to get me to wait. I said that I was not willing to wait anymore. I asked if Gus, one of the coaches and husband of the head coach, wanted to go with me. I figured another pair of eyes would be useful particularly if Louis were hurt. He said we could drive to where we last saw Louis but he was not thinking of going any further. He did not know that I was not going to come back without Louis. We went and told the acting director that we were going to go get Louis. As we were walking up I heard them say that a helicopter was being dispatched to the area. He said “I can’t stop you” and the only thought running through my head was “I was not asking permission and you could not stop me anyway.”
We left around 10. Fortunately, the rain had stopped at about 9 and the roads were not as soft as they were when I arrived earlier. I am fairly sure Gus’ knuckles were white more than once because I was driving a little faster this time. I was confident in the roads so I was confident in my driving faster this time. I also have a lot of experience driving at night. I delivered pizzas in an area with a lot of rural roads so I was a lot more comfortable than I figure Gus was. As we were driving out, we came across a fire department vehicle at one of the cross-sections of road. The firefighter asked for our names and I told him what we were doing. I gave him my phone number and he wished us luck. We got to the running trail about 20 minutes later. I slowed down and started honking the horn and yelling out Louis’ name while I was wearing my headlamp and watching along the sides of the vehicle. We drove like that for about a mile until I saw Louis on the driver’s side laying under a tree. Turned out, he was on the road across from the turn for Station 29. I was ecstatic. I was very happy he was not hurt. He said he had missed the turn off for the aide station and ended up going further up the road and turned back into the first section of the course. He said he ran for a mile and figured he took the wrong turn. He said he did this a few times and, all told, ran about 40 miles. As the sun started to set, he realized that he was in danger of getting truly lost. His saving grace was the adage that you do not do anything to make yourself more lost and just stay put. This was his best course of action because that is exactly how I found him. He was right where we had last seen him. He said he had fallen asleep about 20 minutes before we found him. He said he was not really worried because he knew I would find him eventually. I am humbled to have garnered such trust from anyone. I am blessed that I was able to find him. We never did see a helicopter. At one point I was going to call the news services in Tucson and perhaps see if they could send out a helicopter since this was a good news story if nothing else.
It turned out that Louis was the only one that was missing. All the other unaccounted for had shown up or had called someone to pick them up along the course and never checked in.
I feel that I was there to go get Louis that night. I had contemplated dropping out of the race as late as the week before. Something prevented me from doing so. It did not feel right to me to drop out of the race. Looking at how all that transpired I feel that I was there for one reason and I am glad to have been there for that reason. I am still looking forward to destroying that race next year though. 🙂
Apart from football, I do not really appreciate Sundays as much as other people seem to. Part of it is that my brain is always looking at what is next. My whole life has been a struggle to stay in the moment (or even just in the same day), but I fail more often than I succeed. When I was in college, Sundays were spent catching upon homework or doing research with some football thrown in. When I was working Sundays were spent watching football, going shopping (because the ads come out and that is what you do), or doing some form of housework. All of this with the undertone that Monday was right around the corner. Never mattered what I was doing. Even if Monday was a holiday, there was always this feeling of dread that it was already over. This made Sundays hard to tolerate. They still are but now I have to share them with family.
I tend to not want to do anything on Sundays because of this dread. Oddly, it has not dissipated since becoming a stay-at-home-dad, it has increased at times. I think my introversion has been able to run rampant and weekends are intruded upon by their all-day presence. Fridays have been met with the same dread because my intro-self (IS) knew it would not get the energy it needs just to survive. That time alone never seemed to be enough. Over the last 9 months, IS has had plenty of time to recharge but it seems insatiable and seems to drain faster in the presence of others faster than it ever has before in my life. What do I need to do to get past this? Is this a side effect of ADHD combined with being an introvert? ( These are questions I have been exploring and perhaps will share their answers here. Thank you for coming.

I know I have been gone awhile. Sorry. I have been hectic since the race. My life has been hectic too.
I have been quietly starting a book in my head about life and running.
I will finish that story about Old Pueblo and publish it soon.
Kids are on summer break so things are even more hectic around here. They start summer school Monday so it should be a little better.
I have not gotten a job yet. Seriously considering other options. I would like to make money online but the logistics and details escape me so I tend to not start. (ADHD kicking in)
My introvert has taken over recently (which is why I have not posted on the blog).
X was accepted into gifted preschool so both kids will be at the same school and on the same schedule in the fall.
That last statement sounds like bragging but it is more just happy that they will both be at the same place than going to the special class.
I hope to get back into regular blogging because it does help organize and clear my thoughts

On Saturday, a friend and I will be embarking on our first ultramarathon. I look forward to this race. I have not gone this far in one run before. He is an Ironman so he has gone this distance before, but never just running. The forecast is nice weather and it is in the middle of nowhere. I am excited. This will be fun. I spend the next couple of days packing my drop bags and making sure I have it all planned out. The only wrench is the possibility of rain. I really do not like wearing long sleeves much less a jacket of any kind when I run. I am not sure if the tradeoff of possibly being cold is enough motivation to wear long clothing that might get soaked. Try lugging that around for miles until you can drop it off. My friend is concerned about the combination of distance and elevation changes so we are running the whole thing together. I was hoping to do this race fast, but friends are more important that personal best times. This is our first ultra, so this one is for the experience for future races.
I will continue to go vegan for this race. I will be bringing rice balls with chia seeds, beans, and nutritional yeast for protein, calories and carbs. The will be cooked in turmeric and ginger for the anti-inflammatory effects. I will also be bringing an energy drink that has lemon, chia, and ginger to reduce swelling. I have a large bag of Heed as well as packets of Perpetuum for electrolytes and calories. I will have Hammer gels and e-Gels on me and at each drop along the way.
This should be a fun race. I will try to post more later or tomorrow.
2 weeks to go until the race and I made a mistake today. The last couple weeks were so busy with birthdays and parties that I got no running done. The mistake came when I decided to keep my schedule and do my final long runs before the race. Today was supposed to be 4 hours and 5 hours tomorrow. I did the 4 and I am wiped out. I have not felt this bad after a run in so long that I do not remember. I get cramps in my feet, thighs, hamstring and I even got a cramp in my hand. The worst part was that I had no rest time before getting the kids. When I got out of the car, I was in a ton of pain. As I was going into the daycare, my thigh cramped so bad I could barely stand much less walk. When I started moving, my hammy in the other leg decided it was not enough attention. Not to be outdone, when I bent over to massage the areas, my intercostals chimed in. Total mess. I am laying in bed now and things are better ( because I have not moved in an hour). I guess running 5 hours tomorrow might have to be abolished. I will not be taking so long off from running during training again. Lesson learned.
After a couple weeks I find I am less and less interested in being online. I have entered information overload. I have spent entire days just checking email, social media, and just reading articles online. I have started to tune out much of what I read now. I see the articles with interesting information related to health or listing some new targeted exercises. Too much information means too little is getting through. I know I want to use this information but the impulsive part of me just files it away and looks for the next interesting article. I am not going to do this anymore. I have shut off all notifications on my phone and I will only keep the application so I can have the Nike app post my runs. A friend recently told me about a nice trail for running that is actually right by my house. This will be ideal to continue my training for the ultramarathon. I ran this route a couple days ago and found I could have easily gone longer but I had to go pick the kids up from school.
