Summer officially begins for my family today. The kids had summer camp for the 4 weeks after school was out so it was not really summer yet. Even though they only went for 3 hours a day for 4 weeks, it was still school. Tomorrow we go to the LEGO Movie at the summer movies. We have not seen it yet. We bought the Blu-Ray but we wanted the kids to have something to look forward to so we held off watching it at home. They are still reluctant to go to the theater at times so seeing a movie they have not seen yet might be motivation as well.
Education. We are continuing their education over the summer but we make it as fun as we can. Dictator is getting good at reading and can even sit and read some material by himself. Her Majesty wants desperately to do the same activities as her brother but still struggles. This is a point of contention for him because he wants to do his work by himself. We bought membership to the science museum so we will be going there many times over the month before school starts again. Fortunately, they are now going to the same school so they start and end not only at the same time but in the same location. This saves a lot of travel time.
I am slowly getting the garage not only straightened but also cleared of a lot of garbage we have collected over the years. This task is getting slower as the kids get older because 4 people generate more junk than 2. Stuff that goes in the garage tends to disappear, though if it not remembered within a couple weeks. The real difficulty is getting rid of things that we ‘might’ need in the future. I have noticed that a lot of the time things we dispose of tend to become useful shortly after they are gone. We also need to have both springs on the garage door replaced. A few months ago I remember the door slamming down harder than normal but I did not think much of it. Right after, the door would not open on its own anymore. I noticed that a couple wires were loose and I have spent a few months problem-solving the door from time to time. It occurred to me that the spring might be broken but thinking back, one of the springs was always broken and it never occurred to me that it was running on one spring until it was pointed out by my mother-in-law. I realize now that one of the springs has always been broken.
We are looking at possibly going to Sea World this summer, if we can swing it. I spent a lot of summer vacations in my youth in San Diego because my uncle lived/lives there. For awhile my grandmother was there as well. Those were fun times. My kids want to go to a beach and I really want them to experience all the fun of Sea World. We would also get to see family.
This has become a travesty. Applying for a cashier job and I do not even get a ‘Thank you for applying’ letter. I believe I have said this before, applying for a job online is a ridiculous and soul-sucking endeavor. Not being able to contact a real person for a job that requires less skill than it takes to walk and breathe at the same time is silly. Want to know what is even more ridiculous? I will tell you. The jobs I apply for have been open since I first applied a year ago. Even a job like a baker that does require some knowledge and skill could involve training and am fairly sure I could have become a proficient baker in an entire year of on-the-job training.
I may just look into one of these at-home businesses. Maybe I can sell people vitamins or something. I am past doing jobs I can’t believe in, though. I have to do some research. I have seen a few that might work but most of the products are just soulless, manufactured crap aimed at making a buck. Of course, this is the majority of what it seems people do these days anyway. Maybe I am just aiming for a standard too high for the workplace today.
I run when I can. I am focusing on mountain running. We are running in the Solemates Tryptophun Run this fall. Fortunately, this is local and we can actually practice/train on the course we will be racing on. It is also a 7 mile loop so, even if someone gets lost, someone can still be easily be found. I need to work because the races I want to race in are beginning to cost a lot more money. The three races I want to race in this winter will cost over $500 just for race fees. This does not include time to train, nutrition, and equipment.
Alta. I have a pair of Alta shoes that I have only used a few times. The sole is coming away from the upper. I am sad about this because I thought these were well made shoes. I might try another model but I think I will try for a pair of Skora or Vibrams for the 100 mile race. Fortunately, the loop is only 7 miles, So I can test different shoes for distance on the day of the race.
On Saturday, a friend and I will be embarking on our first ultramarathon. I look forward to this race. I have not gone this far in one run before. He is an Ironman so he has gone this distance before, but never just running. The forecast is nice weather and it is in the middle of nowhere. I am excited. This will be fun. I spend the next couple of days packing my drop bags and making sure I have it all planned out. The only wrench is the possibility of rain. I really do not like wearing long sleeves much less a jacket of any kind when I run. I am not sure if the tradeoff of possibly being cold is enough motivation to wear long clothing that might get soaked. Try lugging that around for miles until you can drop it off. My friend is concerned about the combination of distance and elevation changes so we are running the whole thing together. I was hoping to do this race fast, but friends are more important that personal best times. This is our first ultra, so this one is for the experience for future races.
I will continue to go vegan for this race. I will be bringing rice balls with chia seeds, beans, and nutritional yeast for protein, calories and carbs. The will be cooked in turmeric and ginger for the anti-inflammatory effects. I will also be bringing an energy drink that has lemon, chia, and ginger to reduce swelling. I have a large bag of Heed as well as packets of Perpetuum for electrolytes and calories. I will have Hammer gels and e-Gels on me and at each drop along the way.
This should be a fun race. I will try to post more later or tomorrow.
Not a typo. I was just being clever and creative in my alliteration.
Watching football today I was jealous of Philly and Pittsburgh fans who got to sit through that awesome weather to see those games. No this is not sarcasm. Football was intended to be played in this type of weather. In fact, the Steelers usually play better in this type of weather. No, I am not happy with the result of the Steelers game so this weekend was a letdown for football all around (ASU is in the Holiday Bowl and they have not won that bowl in 3 tries).
Spent the day cleaning while my kids tore up the house like
a couple of animals children are wont to do.
Went to the grocery store and saved 40% of my bill. Not exactly extreme couponing but I will take the win.
Tomorrow will involve: 30 minutes of weights and core training, 2 hours of running, mopping, and moving furniture, followed by removing more sealant from my counter to prepare for re-grouting my crappy tiled kitchen countertop.
I spent yesterday working in my spare bathroom. The toilet broke over the weekend. I discovered a large crack that went through the tank from top to bottom. Apparently the previous owners ran into the same problem but just applied porcelain paint rather than actually fixing it. The patch lasted for more than eight years but I would rather have it fixed for goodso we replaced the toilet. in the process of replacing it, I realized I needed to paint behind the tank so I had to stop and do that. I made 2 trips to the store for paint and supplies then I had to go back again because the wax ring for the toilet was too small to fit the toilet into the pipe on the floor. I know this is all real interesting but this is what you get when I am just writing to write (sorry).
I have lost 8 pounds since November 12th. 12 more to go.
I got in core working out yesterday and a mile of running. I have cut down on my food intake but I have not recorded how much exactly. That will be a task for next week.
I hope to get a lot done today so I can go for a 23 mile run (10:00 pace) tomorrow. My workout goal for next week is two workouts each day alternating tempo and intervals.
Hope you all have a better than great Thursday!
Thanksgiving was last week. It was nice. We actually had Thanksgiving dinner on Thanksgiving this year. I use the empirical ‘we’ because I was out getting a laptop at a good price for my wife so she can work from home. I did not miss much other than my wife trying to get the kids to sit still and eat in the midst of the kids’ cousins being rambunctious and doing things the little ones cannot do yet. So when I say ‘miss’ I mean in the same spirit as I ‘miss’ diarrhea or I ‘miss’ the chance of getting a venereal disease from an ex-girlfriend (i.e. not so much). I got back in time to play with them and watch them open presents (then start to melt down because it was 9:00 and their bedtime is 6:30).
Thanksgiving was also the second night of Hanukkah (thus the reference to opening presents). Hanukkah has been fun this year. The kids have been able to get a lot of things they want plus some gift cards will allow them to get a few more things that pop up. No latkes but they have been able to have Thanksgiving dinner on Hanukkah which will not happen again until the sun burns out or something like that.
I am continuing the streak of running at least a mile a day. I even ran a mile while we were at a friend’s child’s birthday party and the kids ran it with me (we were at a park with a couple of soccer fields).
I am going to try increasing my posts by doing at least one 5 minute quickie post each day. I will only write for 5 minutes and if I am motivated to write later I will (particularly if I do not finish my post).
That is all for now.
I have been missing the iPad. I wrote some blog/journal entries over the last couple of weeks. I just either did not put them on the computer or in writing at all. I still write blog entries in my head but they tend to not get published because my brain seems to have no urgency to rewrite them once they have been finished. I used to be able to just write my blog on the iPad when I was out anywhere so, yeah, I miss that. the last month has been difficult both in the cleaning and the workout arenas. I was mulling this over a couple weeks ago while my kids were playing at the mall and I decided on a new course of action. I set upon a plan to lose 20 pounds in 60 days. This begins today, November 13, 2013 and ends January 12, 2014.
I outlined a method similar to the one I laid out last year in Time for Weight Loss. Since I am not working I had to add items for keeping busy so I would not just sit around the house on the computer and snacking. Yard work, cleaning the garage, house work and just keeping moving are a big part of the things I need to focus on. I have also got more specific exercises for building core. I can designate specific time each day to core exercises and weights.
I have been working on the mental blocks to working out and pushing myself farther. Still working on it but I have gotten past those blocks many times in the last few months by just forcing the run/workouts. I need to do it more consistently.
This weekend I will be volunteering at the Ironman AZ in the hopes of getting into the race for next year. It should be a great time.
March is the Old Pueblo Ultra (50 miles) near Tucson. I can’t wait for that!
Sleep has been sporadic lately. My daughter has been getting up anywhere between 12:30 and 4:30 each night. This explains part of my lack of posts as well as my mental disorganization and my overall sluggishness. Hopefully this will level off. My kids slept until after 5 today so I am feeling a little more awake and focused. I have found it a bit easier to meditate when I am getting sleep too. That has helped my meditation be more productive in the lsat couple days too. I need to cut this short so I can actually get to bed at a decent time tonight.
Thank you for reading. I am grateful to you all.
Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the day….
The fifth thing…
I forgot to get my garage door opener out of my car. Not really a big deal until you read the rest of this story.
The sixth thing…
I went to get my son and then my daughter. I stopped to get a snack for The Dictator because I forgot to bring anything with me. That was smooth and went without a hitch. Then I got out my keys to start the car and noticed the lack of something in my pocket. Mind you, I thought about getting a ring or carabiner to attach my house key to the keys to the
tank Yukon. I did not, of course. My house key was gone. I thought I had dropped it at Dictator’s school so we left to go check. Nothing. I thought I had possibly dropped it at Her Majesty’s school, so we went back there to check. Nothing. Meanwhile, my wife is heading home from work and her parents are headed to our house to watch the children during the conference. I did not find the key and everyone was at the house, so we went home. At least I could get in now.
The seventh thing…
We get to the school and when my wife closes the passenger door, the side mirror falls off the door. Of the rented tank. I thought these things were built to withstand falling off a cliff or something. Apparently this one could fall off a cliff but, closing the passenger door is too much to handle. This was right on the heels of Little Bit reaming me about getting the insurance from the rental agency.
The conference went well. No surprises since we are in contact with the teacher everyday anyway. We drove to the dealer to return the tank but that rental office had closed. Fortunately, there was another office down the street that was open for another 45 minutes. Good thing or I would have had to break out the duct tape. We traded the tank in for, get this, a larger one. This thing is more like an aircraft carrier on wheels or a portable bridge. Funny though, this one has a more responsive engine.
When we got home, my father in-law misplaced his keys and while we were looking for them, I had a hunch and looked in Dictator’s school bag. There was my house key. They said retrograde started today. I am here to testify. I should have stayed in bed today. At least I got in some meditating.

Last week was difficult because I worked on Friday and did not get my long run in. My run times have actually been less than my planned times. I have been averaging 1:45 on my 400s and 3:30 on my 800s. I have been wearing calf sleeves and they are awesome for recovery time! I have not been doing much blogging but I have a lot to say. I think I will get a few done this week.
Thank you for reading. I appreciate you and your readership.
1. Ran 10 miles today. 12 was the plan but, I was not really feeling it. Plus, the 5 mile turnaround was a good natural stopping point.
2. Swam 300m today. It was hot out and this was a very welcome break.
3. Having issues with one of my computers. I have a MoneyPak virus on it and I can not even boot to Safe Mode. I bought Trend Micro Premium Antivirus thinking it would be a bootable disc and of course, it is not. The customer service people could offer no help other than a $75 one-time service plan to fix the problem.
4. I took the software back to the store and the girl behind the counter tried to guilt me or something by telling me that this was a one-time thing that they have no idea if I copied the software. My thoughts were twofold: I would have gotten the software/cracks/passwords off the Internet had I chosen to do that; you are the one making the choice to take this back, I only asked.
5. My yard looks like it should have mountain lions and anacondas living in it. Maybe I will not have to shop for meat for the kids soon if any large game animals move in. A family of quail would be nice (eggs and fresh meat).
