About

My name is Chris.

This is another attempt at writing this About Page. I have tried several times and each one a failure. I either get interrupted and the program deletes it, or I am unable to finish my thoughts and the program deletes it before I come back to finish. I save it but, alas, none of the first About Pages lived to see the light of an Internet day.
(If they did, they ran away and I am not one to force anyone to stay where they are unhappy. If anyone has adopted them, please take good care of them they are little but have a lot of potential.)

I am a marathon runner since 2006. Endurance has always been my forte but I never got into sports because I had a negative view of ‘jocks’ in high school. That perspective continued in college and was reinforced by a lot of the people I met during that time. I did play racquetball with my partner in crime, Sir Complains-A-Lot-While-Running but when he moved to attend dental school, exercise disappeared. We played softball a few years after he returned but we found that it takes a lot of people and commitment to play softball once a week (who knew?). After we stopped playing because the whole team basically quit, I got it into my head that team sports take too much time and effort from too many people to be able to rely on for fitness.

I started running. It felt good so I decided that I wanted to do marathons. Not just any marathons… Boston. I wanted to qualify. I started researching running and I dug out my books on nutrition so I could do this right. I started training in ernest in June 2005 for a January 2006 marathon. I was doing fairly well and I was even getting up at 4-5 each morning to run before work. My diet did not change much because I rationalized that I was burning off more calories so I should eat more, right? I did not lose much weight as a result. I read the book, Marathon, by Jeff Galloway and was hooked. His method involves walking early in the race to conserve your energy early by walking. Generally through water stations since they are at regular intervals. The problem is, because I was in such poor shape and I was still putting garbage into my body, all this did was give me permission to walk. I ended up with no motivation to run continuously for the final leg of the race. I needed to change my attitude and my paradigm for running. I knew all this at the time but I was not in a place for that kind of change.

I started this blog in 2010 with the intent of chronicling my way through the P90X fitness program. The plan was derailed by my then 6 month old daughter, Her Majesty. My wife, Littl Bit, was also still recovering from having our second child so I was even more busy. Add to the mix our 2.5 year old son (Little Dictator Manipulator) and ‘my’ time was always ‘their’ time. Her Majesty did not sleep more than 4 hours in a row after 6 months like her brother did. My son would often get up shortly after I got her to fall asleep. Neither of these was very conducive to my sanity functioning efficiently and although I tried many times to sell one or both on the Internet, my wife constantly reminded me that we would get caught and go to jail pawn them off on their grandparents, I would miss them and just deal with the lack ofsanity sleep. She did not sleep 4 hours in a row until about 18 months and that was only about 3 days a week. Not until summer 2012 did she finally decide I had enough and she slept through the night most nights.

Two years later… October 2012
I am overweight by 30 pounds. I have not worked out since the first year my son was born. I tried some working out last year because I was running in PF Chang’s Marathon with my friend Louis. That was a disaster for me. We finished in 6.5 hours (walking the whole thing would have been faster). Our longest marathon by a wide margin. Before my son was born we had run marathons for a couple years and we were finally getting into decent shape. My personal best was 4:25 although I lost 30 minutes because I was walked to talk with a man who runs a trail ultramarathon in Utah. I ran a couple more races after that but no workout time means fitness went in the toilet.

I spent those three years raising my beautiful children and I am happy for it. I think they are too.

Now…January 2013
I have lost 20 pounds. I meditate regularly. I have changed to a plant-strong (vegan plus eliminating almost all processed food) diet. I ran a half-marathon without walking at all. I have changed my mentality and my diet and I give my little ones a shot of whiskey every night before putting them to bed. I am now aiming for qualifying for Boston next year, my first Ironman in the fall of 2014, and Ultraman in Hawaii is the next goal after that.

I love my life. I love my family. I love my friends. I love.

This page is dedicated to change, the only constant there is in our physical reality.

Life is good. Come and share my journey. The more the merrier.

Very inspiring. I am serverly over weight and am trying to come up with a solution as to change that. I have tried so many things and none have worked. I was thinking about picking up meditation. I recently stopped smoking (Dec 26 2012) so that is a start

Anything you want to know, ask. Or if you want advice, a shoulder to cry on, or a pep talk, just shoot me a message. Genext13@gmail.com Meditation is probably the best place to start. I am impressed that you stopped smoking. Addictions are real difficult to deal with much less stop. Keep going strong!

I may do that. My boyfriend tries to be supportive but he doesn’t understand what it is like to be severely overweight and not being able to lose the weight even when trying. I guess I never succeeded so far because I haven’t been willing to go out of my comfort zone. Yeah quitting was super hard. I had smoked since I was 14. I quit when I was pregnant and then started back up and quit a few months ago. I still have cravings almost daily. I think quitting a second time is harder than the first. Any who thank you for the encouragement and the offer. You might be getting some emails. If you have any tips for me I’d be wiling to learn. My email is ramanda429@yahoo.com

Oh my gosh, I have so much to ask, to say… firstly, thank you for following my blog, for taking the time to stop by and for being so generous with your lovely comments. I love this page. You inspired me. I am not a runner, but my friend and I want to start slowly by training for a 5k in October. We thought we didn’t have the stamina and had low expectations but we surprised ourselves. Fantastic stuff!

Ask away! I am more than happy to help. A 5K is easy to train for. Are you thinking competitive or just for fun?

I am thinking of running for charity. Maybe Susan G Komen or do team in training. We run once a week so far and I do yoga three times a week. Is this enough training, or do I need to add more? We are going to aim for a 10 k next and move up from there. We feel good but our bodies are still getting used to the running. Hopefully, it will only get better as we go longer and faster.

I too have given up most processed food, I am vegan at least 3 days a week ( sadly I love cheese, although, i try goat cheese more often)and feel much better from being mostly gluten free too.

Yoga is fantastic! Team In Training is great for motivation and getting a good idea for how to train. A great resource for mentors. You might want to look at running 2 or 3 times a week with a few different types of runs. Long run, increase distance by no more than 10% each week. Tempo run, run at a specific pace, like race pace (a pace that maxes you out). Intervals, running at a comfortable pace with short bursts of race pace mixed in. Competitor.com and runnersworld.com both have articles on this and several other types of runs if you want to know more. Variation in workouts increases the change in your body and forces you to adapt faster. You also keep yourself from getting bored and burned out. There are lots of other benefits but these are the basic ones.
I love cheese too. I even add honey (I never really thought of this as an animal product before) to my smoothies at times. I do not avoid animal products for political reasons. That is why I try not using the term ‘vegan,’ I prefer ‘plant-strong.’ The origin of vegan was intended to mean a certain political stand and even though people are changing it, it still carries that meaning and does not even include processed foods. ‘Plant-strong’ is better and does not necessarily exclude animal products. I would suggest just being sure that your plate is 3/4 plant at each meal. I avoid animal products because they increase acidity in the body. Dairy, in particular, increases calcium loss in the bones. Cheese is not the main culprit but the casein, whey, and lactose are not necessary when I get better sources of sugar and protein from plants. Sorry, I am sure you know these things since you mentioned you are vegan too, I ramble sometimes.
Soundalike you are doing things the right way, keep going! Ask anything at any time, I enjoy chatting with you!

Once more I stop by to thank you for the kind words you have left for me. I do appreciate it very much. I do not get to as many blogs posts as I wish to these days….but look for me to make an effort to stop by your way again *s* … I believe you were on vacation yes?

I also see from your about page, that we have many blog friends in common *S* … I would say what a coincidence…but in reality, that fits in too I think. Like-minded people, find like-minded people … whether their view on politics, religion, or movies differ … their values appear similar. *smiles* Again, thank you.

I would like your permission to send you healing energy. There is nothing religions about this. I am studying to be an energy healer. Distance healing is part and parcel of the process. I would not take it personally (or actually, in any way) if you say no. This would be your decision and nothing you would have to do but give me permission. Regardles of your beliefs, synchronicity is something that does happen a lot. I think that there are many reasons for the things that happen and sometimes those things are fortuituous like this one. I believe that I stumbled across your blog for a reason and this is part of it.
Regardless of your answer, I said it before, you are wonderful and it sounds like your daughter is right on track like her mom. I enjoy your mind. Thank you for being you and for being here.
      Namaste
